17 days of dedicated, nationwide music festival has come to an end. In total more than 75 venues from all across Denmark contributed to make this year's winter festival, Vinterjazz, the most ambitious and most visited edition of the festival, since Vinterjazz was established in 2001.
For the audience the festival gave a bit of warmth in a cold time, from the first weekend of Vinterjazz, where Jack DeJohnette and Palle Mikkelborg received the Copenhagen Jazz Festival Honorary Award to standing ovations in Koncerthuset, and until the last weekend of the festival, where Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble gave to extraordinary concerts in the cathedrals of Aarhus and Roskilde.
Vinterjazz is a nationwide music festival focusing on livejazz and its many hangouts around the country. The festival was established have over the last 10 years grown tall and strong, not least thanks to the financial support provided by Nordea Fonden.
"One of the purposes of the festival is to highlight the many dedicated jazz clubs – while stimulating live sites and music arrangers to present jazz (and similar) in the period. This means that Danish bands are able to go on tour around our small country during Vinterjazz - and the added attention to jazz in this period makes it possible to attract international artists as well. Vinterjazz' finest task is to stimulate and inspire jazz in Denmark", says festival manager Signe Lopdrup.
Among other highlights were Leszek Mozdzer, Joshua Redman Trio, ILK Sessions, Anders Koppel anniversery, Bobo Stenson, Musketerfestivalen, Jakob Bro feat. Peter Laugesen, Nicolai Munch-Hansen, Chris Speed and Jim Black, Mark Turner Quartet, Girls In Airports, August Rosenbaum Trio, Carsten Dahl, Lotte Anker and more.
Vinterjazz 2012 also marked the beginning of a new jazz season that culminatives during Copenhagen Jazz Festival, that takes place in Copenhagen in July 6-15.
