 Tampere Jazz Happening celebrates 30th Anniversary

Tampere Jazz Happening brings light and life to the dark month of November for 30th time. The anniversary program includes 24 international orchestras, of which 9 are national.
This year the Happening has a strong focus on world jazz. The opening concert presents the beloved Piirpauke that have recently returned to Finnish national soundscapes with their latest album.
Several internationally acclaimed musicians will delight the audience. Regina Carter and her violin transports us to the remote savanna with her renowned Reverse Thread group. The evening will get wilder as percussionist Cyro Baptista enters the stage with his band Banquet of the Spirits.
Friday night jazz gets updated by dub as BaBa Zula’s vivid show is seasoned with Mad Professor’s sounds. Another exotic gig takes place on Saturday night as well with a performance by Yemen Blues. Their secret is to mix blues, jazz and funk with traditional Mideastern melodies.
Legends among us
Happening is proud to present Abdullah Ibrahim, a South African pianist and composer and one of the most remarkable figures in modern jazz.
Legendary bassist Dave Holland returns to Tampere, and this time he has some gypsy tricks in store for us. Holland, with guitarist Pepe Habichuela, plays original tunes where flamenco meets jazz.
The already passed are still among us: David Murray goes “En Español” and interprets the legendary songs by Nat King Cole with the great Cuban Ensemble. Finnish Tonight at Noon for one pay their tribute to unforgettable Charles Mingus.
Best from Finland
Top Finnish acts feature e.g. the acclaimed accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and sample sage Samuli Kosminen who will take over the stage with Proton string Quartet. It is also allowed to have high expectations when both guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and trumpeter Jukka Eskola perform with their respective super-groups.
The 30th Tampere Jazz Happening takes place November 3th-6th, 2011.
