WOMEX 2011 this year with a focus on jazz & world Five days of Showcases, Conferences, Networking and more - including a special programme dedicated to the many delegates involved in jazz - taking place from Wednesday, 26 to Sunday 30 October in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Europe Jazz Network will present a Conference Session at WOMEX, which will address where jazz sits within the rubric of world music. Blues & Roots: The Fertile Ground of Jazz & World Music, will be led by Gerry Godley (Ireland), Improvised Music; Mehmet Ulug (Turkey), Pozitif Productions; and Oliver Belopeta (Republic of Macedonia), Skopje Jazz Festival. It will question how we respond to artists whose music easily straddles both jazz and world music definitions. The Conference Session will take place from 16:15-17:15 on Friday, 28 October, in Forum Copenhagen, Conference 2.

In addition, Europe Jazz Network has organised the first ever Jazz & World Networking Meeting at WOMEX, which will provide a valuable opportunity to make contacts, discuss and develop new ideas. The Networking Meeting will take place from 12:00-13:00 on Saturday, 29 October, in Forum Copenhagen, Conference 3.

The WOMEX 11 Artist Award will honour a legendary artist: Hugh Masekela, the trumpet prodigy, fiery denouncer of apartheid and Afro-jazz pioneer from South Africa. 

The Showcase Festival line-up includes the maestro of the quarter-tone trumpet, Ibrahim Maalouf (Lebanon/France), at the crossroads of jazz and Arabic music. He will perform at 22:15 on Saturday, 29 October, in Koncerthuset, Studio 1.
