A formidable jazz trio whose third album Alive was hailed Jazz Album of the Year 2010 by Jazzwise and MOJO Magazines, Phronesis are known for their charismatic live performances, which have prompted Jazzwise to describe them as the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST. Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova is renowned for her virtuoso interpretations of the core classical repertory both in concert and on disc. This evening she shows a different side of her artistic persona. Joined by an all-star ensemble including her husband,cellist Matthew Barley, and jazz pianist Julian Joseph, she retraces her roots in Ukraine. The programme reflects the phenomenal influence of gypsy music on both classical and jazz music in the 20th century with repertoire includingduets for violin and cello by Bartók, an ode to Django Reinhardt by jazz composer John Lewis, and compositions by fusion band Weather Report. An unmissable evening with an extraordinary artist.

Alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman was a central figure in the M-Base movement and has been at the forefront of advances in jazz composition for the last 25 years. Inspired by the African Diaspora while studying in Ghana, Coleman explored a new rhythmic language fusing interlocking beats and polyphonic harmonies, offering an alternative to conventional rhythm. Coleman’s latest album, Harvesting Semblances and Affinities, continues to push the boundaries.

Superstar Italian jazz pianist Stefano Bollani makes a rare visit to the UK for a special solo concert. Pioneering British group Empirical head to Turner Sims for the very first date of their UK tour to mark the release of their much-anticipated new album Out ‘n’ In. Their style has drawn admiring notices on both sides of the Atlantic, expertly incorporating elements of classical, African and Cuban music to their fresh-sounding jazz. Their debut recording went on to be voted Jazzwise magazine's album of the year and MOJO magazine's Jazz Album of the Year, whilst 2010 saw them pick up the covetedMOBO award for Best Jazz Act.

The Beats & Pieces Big Band is fast becoming one of the country's most talked about jazz groups. Its 14 members are drawn from some of the most exciting and in-demand young musicians active in the UK today, taking the classic big band sound and add slamming bass and drums, skronking guitar, wah-wah funk and retro 70s fusion. Influenced by Loose Tubes, Polar Bear and Radiohead amongst others, their music redefines the role of the big band instrumentation for a new generation.
