Piotr Orzechowski,

 

a 20-year student of the Krakow Academy of Music has been awarded
first prize in 13th Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition.
Famous contest took
place within legendary 45th Montreux Jazz Festival 2011. He is first Pole who has ever
won this prestigious competition!

Piotr Orzechowski (Poland)


Born 1990 in Krakow, Poland. He currently studies jazz piano at the Krakow Academy of Music
(first year). Finalist and winner of the most renowned Polish jazz competitions. He was awarded
scholarship by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for the most talented students.
Considered one of the most interesting performers of young generation in Poland. Recorded solo
album titled PIANO HOOLIGAN which is a set of a classical repertoire and his compositions.

Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition
is dedicated to pianists under 30. Piotr has been awarded
first prize as its youngest participant! Among 42 applications from 21 different countries from
all around the world, the jury selected 10 pianists to play at the semifinal in Montreux. Then
each of them presented 10-minut material (jazz standard and a personal composition or a
personal choice). After that, there were 4 musicians selected to take part in the final (from
Poland, USA, Azerbaijan and Rep. of Mauritius). Each candidate played during 15 minutes in
front of the Jury one of eight original pieces, a personal choice or a personal composition and 12
bar Blues.

JURY

The Jury of the Parmigiani Solo Piano Competition 2011 was presided by Tommy LiPuma, a
legendary American music producer, three-time Grammy Award winner. In his long career, he
has worked with the finest musicians, including Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Natalie
Cole or Diana Krall.

First Prize
- CHF 10’000.– awarded by the Association des Amis du Festival
- Swiss francs, a swiss manufactured Parmigiani Watch
- a week’s recording time at Balik Farm Studio, located in the breathtaking scenery of
Switzerland’s Toggenburg region. Besides Piotr is invited to be part of the « Montreux
Young Talent Band », a band composed of the winners of the piano and voice competition. In the
winter, the band will spend a week recording a CD together at Balik Studio and in the summer
they have an invitation to perform at the 46th Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2012.
