This trio brings together three young musicians who compose and perform their own music, which is influenced by various musical genres of the Mediterranean area, which is where they all come from.
Stelios Petrakis, a young composer and virtuoso lyra and lute player from the island of Crete, has always been interested in musical exchanges between musicians from different musical backgrounds.
Efrén López, a multi-instrumentalist – he plays the hurdy-gurdy, rabab, ud, fretless guitar and kopuz – and composer from Valencia, Spain, has spent years travelling in the Mediterranean area, the Middle East and Afghanistan, and studying their various musical idioms. He is the founder and director of the Valencian group L’ham de foc.
Bijan Chemirani, who plays the zarb, daff and bendir, learned the secrets of his art from that master of the Iranian zarb, Djamshid Chemirani, his father. He lives in Marseille, France, and has vast experience in sharing his art with musicians who practise different styles.
This trio project is based on the musical and personal relationships between these three musicians, who have many things in common. This is the first time they have all come together to play. They use musical instruments belonging to various traditional musical genres, and are obviously influenced by early music and the music of Crete, Spain and France, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.. Their first album,‘Mavra Froudia – Celles Negres’, is to be released separately in Greece, France and Spain.
