UNKL MODERN JAZZ BEATS www.unkl.de reviews of STAND, the newest release from UNKL "Stand" is an album which has everything that makes instrumental jazz exciting...? ? Carina Prange, Jazz Dimensions "Stand deserves broad attention. The stark openmindedness and fearless genre shifts that characterize this record may unsettle the average jazz listener, but that's because you're not supposed to sit when you listen to this disc.? ? Nils Jacobsen, All About Jazz.com Currently working as an international quartet based in Berlin, Germany, UNKLīs strong group interplay has attracted diverse audiences in North America, Japan and Europe. UNKL performances shift between quartet, trio, duo and solo playing bringing new dimensiones to each composition. By encompasing the history of the music with forward thinking, UNKLīs use of improvisation, modern beats and blending of musical styles gives this personal music a defining character. Gary Hoopengardner and Josh Yellon formed 'UNKL' in September 1997. Originally a sextet comprised of two drummers, dancer, percussion, bass, and saxophone the group has become a constantly changing vehicle for exploring improvisational music incorporating over forty musicians and artists from the U.S. and Europe. UNKL pushes the boundaries of modern jazz combining influences of classical Indian rhythmic conceptions, jazz, and rock with an emphasis on odd meters and spontaneous interplay. UNKL's first CD was released in summer 2001. UNKL has performed throughout the Northeastern US and Europe and has shared the stage with The Sun Ra Arkestra, Ken Vandermark and Charlie Hunter among others. www.unkl.de berlin, germany booking@unkl.de
