1. REGGIE WASHINGTON - MUSIC OF THE PHRASE
Days off: 8, 9, 10, 13 NOV
"MUSIC OF THE PHRASE" is a thought come to life in the mind of bassist extraordinaire REGGIE WASHINGTON (Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Me'shell Ndegeocello).
From his days with Branford Marsalis & Buckshot LeFonque, Reggie has desired to experiment with a DJ/mixologist in a group setting. "MOTP" re-interprets great musical "phrases" from the vast genre Reggie grew up on. From Jazz, R&B, Funk, Fusion, Classical, Reggae to Rap & Blues; the 3 artists accompanying Reggie on this adventure will tear down the boundaries between the styles to perform music for the soul.
The quartet is :
REGGIE WASHINGTON, bass
JEF LEE JOHNSON, guitar (George Duke, Mc Coy Tyner, Rachelle Ferrell, D'Angelo)
PATRICK DORCEAN, drums (Fred Wesley, Zap Mama, Manou Gallo, Mark King)
DJ GRAZZHOPPA, turntables (James Poyser, Aka Moon, Manu Katche, Marc Ribot)
"MOTP" will be an experience for the Heart ... from the Heart !
A groove that never stops.
2. JEF LEE JOHNSON BAND
Days off: 22, 23, 24 NOV
JEF LEE JOHNSON is a true American gift to the musical world.
He plays everything - including guitar, bass, keyboards, sax, drums and drum machines, and is a potent vocalist of broad and powerful range as well. But it's on guitar that he burns most incandescent, conjuring, jawdroppingly brilliant, careening stylistic collisions of legato-laden fusion, angular outness, and state-of-the)art acid-funk. Jef's concept, while wholly and truly original, justly deserves mention alongside such profound, formidable masters as HENDRIX and HOLDSWORTH.
JEF has highly expert foot in many camps, contributing to the point of colaboration with such heavyweights as JAMES CARTER, RACHELLE FERRELL and GEORGE DUKE, and touring and recording with Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. Besides, who can possibly have reservations about the only man on the planet to have played with MC COY TYNER & SISTER SLEDGE on the same day ! Did I mention his bass playing alone has landed him in high-echelon session-land, or are Billy Joel and Roberta Flack too obscure as references ?
Jef Lee Johnson has a new double-CD out called “Longing Belonging Ongoing.”
"I HAVE TO PUT THESE RECORDS OUT MYSELF. THE MUSIC IS TO BE HEARD, NOT JUST ME SITTING AROUND AND IMPROVING UPON WHAT'S BEEN DONE. IT'S LIKE HAVING PAINTINGS HANGING IN THE HOUSE. PEOPLE HAVE TO SEE THEM -OR IN MY CASE, HEAR THEM" - Jef Lee Johnson
