PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT 

of the “Mediterranean Jazz Festival” Competition, the Island of Elba
First Edition - 2009
 
 
Rules and Regulations
 
 
1st Article - The Purpose of the Contest
The purpose of the Contest is to promote innovative jazz music projects, giving the opportunity to new talents and emerging groups to perform in front of a jury of professional musicians, music critics and, of course, the public who are present.
The Island of Elba Mediterranean Jazz hopes to promote the culture and the playing of Jazz music in the region and to offer an opening to young artists who are involved in the research and development of this style of music.
Another purpose of the Contest is to promote the development of tourism on the Island of Elba on an international level, taking into consideration that music is a universal language through which the whole world could know more about the extraordinary beauty of the Island, its natural heritage, its historical and cultural identity with regard to its traditions and local customs. So that all these natural resources can be appreciated, the musicians will perform live, not only in the main square in Marciana Marina using the same equipment as the musicians in the Festival, but in different places, all over the island.
 
2nd Article – Who can enter
These rules and regulations are for all active musical formations either from Italy or elsewhere, without an age limit and either individuals or from Music Schools. Single artists or groups may be admitted to the selection process and must be able to demonstrate their artistic formation by presenting a CV together with photograph and an audio demo inherent to the project that they would like to present.To take part in the competition is absolutely free of charge.
 
3rd Article – The selection
The competitors shall present a musical project in Jazz style. Moreover, they shall perform two well-known pieces chosen by the Artistic Director:
“Round Midnight” and “Take the ‘A’ Train”.
The selection committee shall assess the technical preparation and the curriculum of the musicians together with the originality of their project. In this way, a wide range ot types of jazz can be taken into consideration: from traditional Jazz to fusion types such as latin jazz, popular and ethnic influences, soul, funky and so on.
 
4th Article – The Artistic Direction and Jury
The Artistic Director will be Luigi Campoccia, pianist, singer and arranger for more that 30 years in the field of Italian and international music. He is one of the founders and also teaches in the Siena Jazz Accademy and was also vocalist and pianist for over 15 years with Giorgio Gaber. (http://www.luigicampoccia.it/)
 
The President of the Jury will be Franco Caroni, the principal of the Siena Jazz Accademy. The other members of the Jury are Luigi Campoccia, the drummer Ettore Fioravanti, the music critic Alceste Ayroldi and the journalish Francesco Martinelli.
 
 
5th Article – How to take part
The groups who would like to participate must send the following documents either by the Italian Post or by courier, within and not after the deadline of May 15, 2009:
a)  The Application form that can be found attached to these rules and regulations and downloaded from the website www.elbamjf:org completed in every part and duly signed.
b)  Three identical copies of a CD containing at least three pieces of music that will enable an assessment that will admit the competitor to the contest.
c)  Name and personal data with telephone number and e-mail address of the person in charge of the group or of the soloist.
d)  An updated artistic CV with some good quality photographs, minimum 4.

The recording sent must be made by the same formation that will be performing live during the course of the contest. The material sent will not be returned. The organisers shall not be held responsible for material that does not arrive, that arrives damaged or that arrives outwith the time limits of the regulations.

6th Article – Preselection
The Artistic Director, Luigi Campoccia will examine the material sent and will decide to admit 18 groups to the contest. His decision shall be final. The groups will then face each other in pairs, starting on 24th June and finishing on 5th July 2009 in Marciana Marina (Li). The results of the selection with the calendar of the performances will be published on the website www.elbamjf.org from the 1st of june and the person in charge of the group or solist will be informed by telephone or by e-mail.
 
7th Article – The Programme Performance
The contest will last for 9 days and will proceed in two phases, Semi-finals and the Final.
The First Phase: Semi-finals
The groups will perform (two each evening) to proceed directly to the Final. The selection will be based on marks given by the Jury on a performance of 45 minutes. The Jury will take into consideration 3 criteria: Style and InterpretationArrangementImprovisation. The marks system will be on a scale from 1 to 10.
The three groups who have the highest points will automatically proceed to the Final.
The Jury will also take into consideration every evening the opinion of the audience, using a points system that will only be used in the case of a tie.
 
The Second Phase: The Final
The Final of the Contest will take place on the 5th of July, 2009, before the main Festival itself begins. The names of the Finalist groups will be published on the morning of the 4th of July, 2009 and will be communicated telephonically. The formations will perform in Marciana Marina with a 30 minute programme each during the Final evening. The Jury will use the same standard criteria as in the semi-final phase.
 
8th Article – Awarding the Prizes
The prize-giving will take place at the end of the Final, within one hour of the end of the performances. The President of the Jury, Franco Caroni, principal of the Siena Jazz Accademy, will present the leader of each formation with a cash prize to the value of: Euro 3000,00 for the First Prize
Euro 2000,00 for the Second Prize
Euro 1000,00 for the Third Prize.
The Jury will then choose the Best Soloist of the entire Contest and the prize will be a grant to take part in the 2010 edition of the prestigious summer seminar of Siena Jazz. The name will be published on the website www.elbamjf.org on the 6th of July, 2009.
The grant will cover the entire cost of the inscription and it cannot be exchanged.
 
9th Article – Advantages and Agreements
- During the days of the Contest, the organisers guarantee hospitality and the groups will agree to perform in business premises (clubs, restaurants, hotels, etc.) and in public places (squares, etc.) and the proceeds will go to the organisation.
The Contest will be well-covered by local and national press.
- The first three prize-winners are obliged to perform free for one evening in the month of September in order to publicise the following edition of the Festival.
 
10th Article – Obligations

Every competitor will perform free of charge for the common ends of the Contest itself and by applying to take part in the competition, the applicant will give his implied consent for the use of his image, his music or his artistic performance that might be used before, during or after the contest under the above-mentioned rules and regulations.
