|Promoon Production & Promotion proudly presents the outlaw of Finnish jazz: Esa Pietilä Trio. |
The music of Esa Pietilä Trio is Scandinavic and free-oriented, composed by bass player Uffe Krokfors and saxophonist Pietilä. The debut CD of the trio (Direct) was released on April 4, 2003 and has aspects of every side of communication between the members, ranging from straightforward energetic free playing to soundscapes, not forgetting the use of different pulses, colours and duo combinations within the group.
Esa Pietilä (b. 1964) is among the most talented saxophonists and composers in the young Finnish jazz generation. A Sibelius Academy jazz department graduate, his formal education also contains private lessons in the USA under the tutelage of Dave Liebman, Rick Margitza, Rich Perry, Ellery Eskelin and such. In Copenhagen Pietilä has studied with Tomas Franck. The saxman's most notable composition teacher is American composer / bandleader Rich Shemaria. Pietilä's career had its early beginnings in big band playing, commenced already at age 15 in his hometown of Pori.
Pietilä's original style and various local jazz projects, in which he has participated both as a musician and a tunesmith, have stabilised his position on the national jazz circuit. The man's international career got a big boost late 1998, as the Dutch label A-RECORDS /CHALLENGE released his album "Fastjoik". This collection of individual and multifarious compositions is performed by Pietilä's Finnish quartet - with some extra help thrown in for good measure by the Swede trumpet virtuoso Anders Bergcrantz. In the past small group projects have led him to perform with the likes of Mike Nock, Ron McClure, Kjartan Valdemarsson , Odean Pope, Jimmy Knepper, Roland Vasquez and Erling Kroner. Esa has also stood on stage with many global jazz luminaries, e.g. Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Carla Bley, Vince Mendoza and Maria Schneider.
Apart from his own groups Pietilä is a long-time member of the Espoo Big Band and the Latin-tinged Fiestecita. He has also performed in the ranks of the UMO Jazz Orchestra and the About Seven Brothers-sextet. Esa has composed music not only for the aforementioned orchestras, but also for numerous jazz productions by the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation YLE and a multitude of national projects ranging from dance theatre pieces to documentary films. Aside from his active career in music, Esa Pietilä finds time to give saxophone lessons.
Esa Pietilä Trio will be touring from Spring to late Autumn and are available for festivals throughout the Europe and USA.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ, Matthew Wuethrich
Like its predecessors, the Esa Pietilä Trio peels away jazz's conventions to reveal its basic sound elements, but its efforts on Direct are leaner and more refined. With a minimum of song structure but a maximum of group interaction, they deliver a visceral gut-punch with both urgency and subtlety...
DAILY PAPER HELSINGIN SANOMAT (Finland), Jukka Hauru
"Direct" is Esa Pietilä's third and best album. He is finding his own voice through freer expression. Pietilä's expressive moods are supported exquisitely by quaranteed rhythms of bassist Uffe Krokfors and drummer Markku Ounaskari. Excellent sound of this album through fine recording work also deserves a thank You.
Direct sounds exactly like it`s name reveals; cool, muscular and direct!
With His third CD Pietilä seems to be very much at home on these acoustic and free moods. The compositions have long structures, which are based on free-based expression. The group does not go for the traditional melodic thinking; instead of that the weight seems to be at collective communication. Good example of that is a wild and rugged tune called ”A Sign”. YES, Pietilä has done his best CD. Also the performances of the group are excellent, GO FOR IT !
