COMPOSER, ARRANGER, DOUBLE BASS, PERCUSSION
Kostas Theodorou has been an active member of the Greek music scene since 1983, when he moved to Thessaloniki from his home village in Northern Greece, where he had abandoned school at the early age of 16 in order to devote his life to music. He taught himself guitar, then electric bass and finally decided to focus on the double bass in 1989. For years he travelled throughout Europe in a mobile home, learning to play different musical instruments and styles. Since he returned to Greece, he has worked as a musician with many composers and performers, a.o. Mikis Theodorakis, Dionyssis Savvopoulos, Savina Yannatou, Theodosii Spassov, Ara Dinkjian, Arto Tuncboyaciyan and Nikos Kypourgos. He has arranged the music for CD productions of seven famous Greek performers, such as Dionyssis Savvopoulos and Thanasis Papakonstantinou (Melina Kana).
His own music is definitely jazz, but also definitely Greek, both with Balkan (his home village is on a big mountain called Kaimaktsalan, in the very north of Greece on the border with FYROMacedonia) and Mediterranean influences. One of the over 40 music productions he participated in as a musician, arranger or composer is his personal Opum Magnum “Nostos”. Another CD production has just been finalized and is waiting to be released.
Recent performances with his septet at the Brugge’s Festival and in Rudolstadt had such an overwhelming response from the audience, that it became obvious that his music should have a regular place at the world and jazz music festivals internationally. The members of the septet (which can become a sextet, quintet or quartet) are all renowned musicians for their skill either in jazz or traditional music or both.
