Born
and raised in N.Y.C., Ben received a drum set at age five and was
playing with his father, saxophonist/arranger, Frank Perowsky as
a young teen. Soon after his musical studies he was performing
with legends James Moody, Rickie Lee Jones, David Liebman, and touring with funk/jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers.
Recently, he has carved out new musical territory with his own
group the Ben Perowsky Trio featuring saxophonist Chris Speed and
bassist Scott Colley, as well as Danny Blume's
dub/electronica group, Liminal.
Other involvement includes: the critically acclaimed band Elysian
Fields, award winning Dave Douglas quartet with saxophonist Chris Potter and bassist
James Genus, also pianist Uri Caine, clarinetist Don Byron, and Afro-popstar Salif Keita (latest CD produced
by Vernon Reid).
Over
the years Ben has been touring and/or recording with many
different artists. Some of these include legendary jazz
guitarists Pat Martino and Mike Stern, Steely Dan's Walter Becker, Velvet Underground's
John Cale, and saxophonists Bob Berg and Michael Brecker. He also played percussion and wrote a suite (for
a short time) in John Lurie's Lounge Lizards. He is a founding
member of the electric jazz group Lost Tribe with three CDs
recorded to date and plays bebop with his Dad on a fairly regular
basis.
