Gaye Su Akyol

The Turkish metropole of Istanbul has always been a crossroads of cultures. And that resonates with the songstress and performer Gaye Su Akyol: she tackles the Anatolian folklore with its Eastern melodies and uneven rhythms and equips them with rocky-psychedelic voices. She pulls apart tradition and pimps this with Nirvana and Spaghetti-Western. What gets created is intoxicating – one could call it Turkish Surf-Rock. In the process, Gaye Su Akyol launched something like an uprising against the cultural conservatism in Turkey. Amongst others, this can also be heard in Western radio stations.
