Welcome to the May newsletter. We've had a busy few weeks including our role as festival partners at Cheltenham Jazz Festival sponsoring three bands to perfom at the prestigious festival.These included performances from Bobby Previte, Tim Berne and local rising star Dan Nicholls all which recieved some great reviews which are featured on the Birmingham Jazz website reviews page.

Big Dave is Seb Rochford's new band, a trio with Patrick Walden, formerly guitarist with Pete Doherty's Babyshambles who has abandoned Pete and the rock lifestyle. The trio, with Ruth Goller on bass guitar, has been jamming together for some time and promises an exciting mix.
Walden spoke about his new band, Big Dave, which he formed with Acoustic Ladyland’s Seb Rochford and Ruth Goller in NME in January:
“The Big Dave sound is melodic and hard – there’s elements of Sonic Youth and or Nirvana,”

Jason Moran presents In My Mind Monk at Town Hall 1959

Jason Moran is a brilliant young pianist who has last appreared in Birmingham depping in the Dave Holland Quintet. The concert presents Jason's recreation and interpretation of Theonious Monk's famous big band session at New York's Town Hall in 1959. The band will feature Nasheet Waits on drums, Tarus Mateen on bass,plus a UK big band with Jason Yarde, Bryon Wallen and Denys Baptiste. There will be a video footage from the original concert as a backdrop.

resonance events is a new club night at the Town Hall building on the success of the Gilles Peterson night during the Re-Opening Festival. The night will present an eclectic mix of jazz , funk and hip hop. The first session presents the Herbaliser, the amazing band featuring Chris Bowden on sax, Ollie Teeba on the decks and Jake Wherry on bass.
In support will be Chris Read from Substance and Mad Flow.Also featuring visuals from Chromotouch and opening night set from DJ Maxwell. A totally unique club night experience set in the incredible venue of Town Hall. not to be missed!

Julian Arguelles brings his octet to Birmingham as our final concert in The Series. The octet is Ensemble in Residence at the University of York and is doing a short tour before recording a new album. Julian is of course originally from the Birmingham area and first came to prominence in both the Walsall Youth and Midlands Youth Jazz orchestra (WYJO and MYJO). He went on to become a member of the very influential Loose Tubes Big band in its heyday in the 1980s. He currently commutes between Germany where he is a member of the HR Big Band in Frankfurt and Scotland.

She is touring the UK in support of her new album Secret Life of a Girl on the Babel Label and with a sperb septet featuring Phil Robson on guitar, Liam Noble on piano, Kate Shortt on cello , Dave Whitford on bass, Thebe Lipere on percussion and Simon Lea on drums.
