A true collective, their music combines three distinct compositional and improvisational approaches and exceptional musical rapport. BDB exists already for more than twenty years.
Mark Helias, Ray Anderson and Gerry Hemingway began performing as a trio in the fall of 1977. Their first recording, "Oahspe", was released in 1979. 1984 followed "Right Down your Alley" and 1986 "You Be". Both records
received acclaim from the European and American press, including a
five-star-review in the "DownBeat"-magazine.
In 1988 "Wooferlo" was released. The "Wire Magazine" wrote: "Each
musician has a story to tell. The solos are stuffed with event and
happenstance."
After 1988 the group went into dormacy, while all three of its members
pursued their own individual groups. Ray Anderson became one of most
important jazz-trombinists. Mark Helias is know as one of the most
virtuoso and most interesting bassist of the music-scene of New York.
And Gerry Hemingway appeared a creative bandleader in different
formations.
Since 1993 BassDrumBone tours Europe regularly. The trio also released
the CD "Hence the Reason" (Enja).
